📝 Description

Parkinson’s disease is described as a progressive neurodegenerative disorder primarily impacting movement, balance, and coordination. The condition arises from the gradual deterioration or death of dopamine-producing neurons located in the substantia nigra region of the brain. The resulting loss of dopamine leads to characteristic motor symptoms, including tremors, muscle rigidity, slowed movement (bradykinesia), and postural instability. Cellular pathology in Parkinson’s disease involves the accumulation of abnormal protein aggregates known as Lewy bodies, which are predominantly composed of misfolded alpha-synuclein protein.

In addition to motor impairment, Parkinson’s disease involves non-motor symptoms that can affect various body systems. These non-motor manifestations include sleep disturbances, depression, cognitive impairment, constipation, loss of smell, and autonomic dysfunction. The etiology of Parkinson's disease is complex, involving potential influences from genetic susceptibility and environmental factors, although the majority of cases are classified as idiopathic, meaning the specific cause remains unknown.
