📝 Description

Ida Lewis assumed the duties of a lighthouse keeper at the age of 15 following her father's stroke. She served on a small island in Rhode Island for 39 years, during which time she was credited with saving between 18 and 25 lives through various rescues. One notable incident occurred when she was 16, rescuing four men from a capsized boat. In 1869, Lewis gained national recognition for saving soldiers during a severe blizzard, earning her the title "Bravest Woman in America," which led to a visit from President Ulysses S. Grant.

Further documented bravery includes a rescue attempt during a hurricane with 30-foot waves when she was 39. Lewis remained at her post until her death at age 69. Subsequent to her service, the lighthouse where she worked was renamed in her honor to commemorate her extensive career as a heroic American lighthouse keeper.
