📝 Description
A short video featuring the preparation of soda bread, utilizing a recipe adapted from Paul Hollywood's cookbook, 'How to Bake'. Soda bread is characterized by its quick preparation time because it relies on chemical leavening rather than yeast, eliminating the need for proving. The reaction between bicarbonate of soda and an acid, typically buttermilk, instantly produces carbon dioxide, which enables the bread to rise during baking. The base recipe includes 500g plain white flour, 1 teaspoon of bicarbonate of soda, 1 teaspoon of salt, and 400ml of buttermilk.
This bread recipe allows for variations, such as incorporating grated Cheddar with chopped raw onion or adding chopped olives with sun-dried tomatoes. Furthermore, half of the white flour can be substituted with wholemeal flour to alter the texture and nutritional profile. The preparation time is noted as 20 minutes, with a baking time of 30 minutes once the oven is preheated to 200°C.
