📝 Description
The Southern Yellow-billed Hornbill (Tockus leucomelas), sometimes colloquially referred to as Zazu, exhibits specific courtship and nesting behaviors. During courtship, the male feeds the female over a period that can last up to a month by delivering small food items directly from his beak. Following mating, the pair selects a tree cavity, typically oriented towards the northeast, for nesting.
The nesting process involves the female sealing the entrance of the cavity using her feces, leaving only a narrow slit. This aperture allows the male to pass food to the female while she incubates the eggs inside the enclosed nest structure composed of bark and leaf litter.
