The Government of Gujarat has confirmed plans to establish a new satellite launchpad in the state's Gir Somnath district, situated between Veraval and Diu. This initiative is intended to position Gujarat as a significant hub for space technology within India. The location selection was conducted in consultation with IN-SPACe, the Indian National Space Promotion and Authorisation Centre. The facility is planned to serve as an alternative, state-of-the-art site for launching satellites into orbit, similar in function to the Satish Dhawan Space Centre in Sriharikota.

The strategic location on the western coast, near the equator, provides geographical advantages for satellite launches. This project aligns with the broader Gujarat Space Policy (2025), which also includes the development of a Gujarat Space Park over 100 acres near Sanand, encouraging private sector investment in the aerospace industry.
