📝 Description
A federal judge issued a temporary block on United States sanctions imposed against Francesca Albanese, the UN Special Rapporteur on the situation of human rights in the Palestinian territories occupied since 1967. The ruling suggested the sanctions, originally enacted by the Trump administration, may have infringed upon her constitutionally protected free-speech rights.
Francesca Albanese faced sanctions in July 2025 following public commentary and a detailed report criticizing Israel's military actions in Gaza. Her June 30 report identified over 60 corporations, including major tech companies, allegedly participating in what she termed an "economy of occupation into an economy of genocide." The report urged international bodies, such as the International Criminal Court, and national governments to pursue prosecutions and implement asset freezes against these entities.
The legal development concerns the scope of US authority in relation to international human rights officials and sanctions related to the Israeli-Palestinian conflict.
