📝 Description
The tritone substitution, often abbreviated as Tritone Sub, is a harmonic device fundamental to jazz improvisation and composition. It involves replacing a dominant seventh chord with another dominant seventh chord whose root is located a tritone away (six semitones) from the original root. For example, a G7 chord might be substituted with a Db7 chord.
This harmonic maneuver maintains the tritone interval—the dissonant core necessary for the resolution—while introducing altered color tones. In functional harmony, this substitution works because the altered dominant often resolves to the tonic chord in the same manner as the original dominant chord, providing a reharmonization tool frequently employed by brass players, including trumpet players, in jazz contexts.
