This historical documentary cycle is based on the seminal work of the same name by 19th-century historian and cultural figure Nikolai Karamzin. The project covers events in the history of the Russian state from its formation up to the beginning of the Time of Troubles (Smuta). The production utilizes modern computer animation techniques to visually interpret Karamzin's literary source material. The narration throughout the series is provided by Yuri Shevchuk, composer, poet, and leader of the rock band DDT.
